Meerkat, a video conference app for k-12

problerm research, market exploration, brand, UI, Tech exploration
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the inadequacy of design in educational applications used by students. To address this issue, I proposed the creation of a video conference app specifically designed for education. The app would allow teachers to customize the user interface for each student based on their individual school accommodations (e.g. 504, IEP). While schools are required to provide these accommodations in the virtual classroom, they are currently unable to do so due to the limitations of the applications they use for video conferencing, which were designed for business environments, not for schools.
We explored various technologies for building the app, but unfortunately we were unable to secure the necessary resources to proceed with the project.

Some clips from the tech exploration I did with the devs

Before jumping into too much work UI work, we explored technology such as: Tensorflow, Twilio and React. Here are some clips

In this clip, we explore an eye tracking feature that could help redirect children who get easily distracted. My research found that teachers were also frequently distracted while trying to get their students to pay attention.

In this clips we explored the mirroring feature and the cam for the video conference feature

Why was it only an experiment if it had potential? This was so much fun to explore, but unfortunately it did not get the dev resources needed to move further than this.

2025 Update

Currently exploring no-code tools to build this! Stay tuned!
